Class 1 - Motors 2

Advantages of a Motor

  • AC motors have the advantage that they can connect directly to a power source
  • AC motors might be expensive in the beginning but will save you more money in the long run

Disadvantages of a motor

  • AC motors will sometimes fault or stop working if the motor is getting more power than it can hold
  • The AC motor cannot operate at low speeds

Uses of a Motor

Motors are used many times during the day and night. People will use a motor when they turn on a fan at home. They will be used when someone uses an electric pencil sharpener in a business. They will be used when someone drives a car to and from work. Motors are used very often in homes and businesses.

Personal Experience

My personal experience with motors is that I ride in a car every day, and cars have motors in them. I also use electric pencil sharpeners, and they have motors in them. That is my personal experience with motors.

History

The motor's history started when Michael Faraday created the first electric motor, but it wasn't very helpful because it couldn't be used for functional uses, it was more of an experiment. It was when William Sturgeon came into the mix when the motor could actually be used for purposes when he made the simple commutator motor.
